How better were it for the savage Lion
To stand before his sire with girded loins! |
چه نیکوتر از نرّه شیر ژیان به پیش پدر بر کمر بر میان |

Asfandiyár
Replied: “How goodly was the sage's saw! |
چنین گفت با مادر اسفندیار
که نیکو زد این داستان هوشیار |

‘Thy secret unto women ne'er confide,
For thou wilt find it in the street outside; |
که پیش زنان راز هرگز مگوی
چو گویی سخن بازیابی بکوی |

Moreover do not as she biddeth thee,
For woman good at rede thou ne'er wilt see.’” |
مکن هیچ کاری به فرمان زن
که هرگز نبینی زنی رایزن |

With frowning face and all abashed his mother
Repented of her words. Asfandiyár, |
پر از شرم و تشویر شد مادرش
ز گفته پشیمانی آمد برش |

Howbeit, went not to Gushtásp but spent
His time with minstrelsy and boon-companions. |
نشد پیش گشتاسب اسفندیار
همی بود با رامش و میگسار |

He drained the wine-cup for two nights and days,
And took his ease among his moon-faced dames. |
دو روز و دو شب بادهٔ خام خورد بر ماهرویش دل آرام کرد |

Gushtásp upon the third day was informed
About his son's pretension to the state, |
سوم روز گشتاسب آگاه شد
که فرزند جویندهٔ گاه شد |

That he was growing more resolved and needs
Must have the Kaian crown and throne. Forthwith |
همی در دل اندیشه بفزایدش
همی تاج و تخت آرزو آیدش |

He called Jámásp and all Luhrásp's diviners.
They came, their tablets on their breasts, and he |

Inquired about the brave Asfandiyár:—
“Is he to have long life? Will he abide |
برفتند با زیجها برکنار
بپرسید شاه از گَو اسفندیار |

peace, prosperity, and all delights?
|
که او را بود زندگانی دراز نشیند به شادی و آرام و ناز |

Is he to wear the crown of king of kings,
And will the good and great rely on him?” |
به سر بر نهد تاج شاهنشهی
بر او پای دارد بهی و مهی |

The wise man of Írán,
on hearing this,
Looked at his ancient astrologic tablets, |
چو بشنید دانای ایران سخن
نگه کرد آن زیجهای کهن |

While sorrow filled the lashes of his eyes
With tears, and knowledge all his brow with frowns. |
ز دانش بروها پر از تاب کرد
ز تیمار مژگان پر از آب کرد |

He said: “Ill are my days and ill my stars,
And knowledge bringeth ill upon my head. |
همی گفت بد روز و بد اخترم
ببارید آتش همی بر سرم |

Would fate had cast me to the lion's claws,
Preventing glorious Zarír; |
مرا کاشکی پیش فرخ زریر
زمانه فگندی به چنگال شیر |

or would that mine own sire
Had slain me ere ill fortune reached Jámásp! |
و گر خود نکشتی پدر مر مرا
نگشتی به جاماسب بد اخترا |

then I Had not beheld him flung upon the ground,
All dust and blood; |
ورا هم ندیدی به خاک اندرون
بر آن سان فگنده پیش پر ز خون |

Although Asfandiyár in combat now
May rend a lion's heart by his attack; |
چو اسفندیاری که از چنگ اوی
بدرّد دل شیر ز آهنگ اوی |
