Him Núsh Ázar espied, drew sword, |
چو از دور نوشآذر او را بدید
بزد دست و تیغ از میان برکشید |

and smote
His foeman's head, who came from steed to dust. |
یکی تیغ زد بر سر و گردنش
بدو نیمه شد پیلپیکرْ تنش |

Zawára spurred his warhorse, neared, and cried
To Núsh Ázar: |
زواره برانگیخت اسب نبرد
به تندی به نوشآذر آواز کرد |

“Him hast thou slain and now
Stand fast thyself! I do not call Alwá
A horseman.” |
که او را فگندی کنون پای دار
چو الوای را من نخوانم سوار |

With his spear he smote the head
Of Núsh Ázar, who tumbled to the ground. |
زواره یکی نیزه زد بر برش
به خاک اندر آمد همانگه سرش |

The day turned 'gainst his host when he was slain. |
چو نوشآذر نامور کشته شد
سپه را همه روز برگشته شد |

His youthful brother Mihr-i-Núsh, a swordsman,
In tears, with troubled
heart, |
برادرش گریان و دل پر ز جوش
جوانی که بد نام او مهرنوش |

in dudgeon spurred
His elephantine steed and from the centre |
غمی شد دل مرد شمشیرزن
برانگیخت آن بارهٔ پیلتن |

Advanced before the lines with lips a-foam
Through anguish, |
برفت از میان سپه پیش صف
ز درد جگر بر لب آورده کف |

while for his part Farámarz,
Like maddened elephant, came, Indian sword
In hand, |
وزان سو فرامرز چون پیل مست
بیامد یکی تیغ هندی به دست |

and closed with noble Mihr-i-Núsh
While both hosts shouted. |
برآویخت با او همی مهرنوش
دو رویه ز لشکر برآمد خروش |

Both antagonists
Were noble youths—a prince and paladin; |
گرامی دو پرخاشجوی جوان
یکی شاهزاده دگر پهلوان |

They were as fierce as lions combative,
And with their swords belaboured one another. |
چو شیران جنگی برآشوفتند
همی بر سر یکدگر کوفتند |

Though Mihr-i-Núsh was active on the field
He had not strength to fight with Farámarz. |
در آوردگه تیز شد مهرنوش
نبودش همی با فرامرز توش |

The young prince raised his sword and hoped to lay
His famous foeman's head upon the dust, |
بزد تیغ بر گردن اسب خویش
سر بادپای اندر افگند پیش |

But struck the blow upon his own steed's neck
So that it came down headlong to the ground,
And Farámarz dispatched him thus unhorsed; The battlefield
was reddened with his blood. |
فرامرز کردش پیاده تباه ز خون لعل شد خاک آوردگاه |

Now when Bahman beheld his brothers slain,
And all the soil beneath them turned to mire |
چو بهمن برادرش را کشته دید زمین زیر او چون گل آغشته دید |

With gore, he came up to Asfandiyár,
When he was in the hottest of the fight, |
بیامد دوان نزد اسفندیار
به جایی که بود آتش کارزار |

And said to him: “O ardent sire! a host
Of Sigzians hath come forth to strive with us! |
بدو گفت کای نره شیر ژیان
سپاهی به جنگ آمد از سگزیان |

Thy two sons—Núsh Ázar and Mihr-i-Núsh—
Have yielded wretchedly their lives to them. |
دو پور تو نوشآذر و مهرنوش
بخواری به سگزی سپردند هوش |
