How Rustam returned to his Palace |
تو با او چه گویی به کین و به خشم؟
اندرز پشوتن به اسفندیار |

As Rustam went forth from the tent-enclosure
He stood before the entry for awhile, |
چو رستم به در شد ز پرده‌سرای
زمانی همی بود بر در به پای |
|

And thus addressed the tent: “O house of hope!
Blest were the days that saw Jamshíd within thee. |
به کریاس گفت ای سرای امید
خنک روز کاندر تو بد جمّشید |
|

Great wert thou in the time of Kai Káús,
And in the days of favoured Kai Khusrau; |
همایون بدی گاهِ کاوس کی
همان روز کیخسرو نیک‌پی |

But now the door of Grace is shut upon thee,
For one unworthy sitteth on thy throne.” |
در فرّهی بر تو اکنون ببست
که بر تخت تو ناسزایی نشست |

Asfandiyár, the hero, heard the words,
Strode forth to noble Rustam, |
شنید این سخن‌ها یل اسفندیار
پیاده بیامد بر نامدار |

and spake thus:—
“Why art thou angry with the tent-enclosure,
Thou well-advised? |
به رستم چنین گفت کای سر گرای
چرا تیز گشتی به پرده‌سرای |

Well might a man of sense
Bestow upon Zábulistán the name
Of ‘Babblestead.’ |
سزد گر برین بوم زابلستان
نهد دانشی نام غُلغلستان |

Why need a guest abuse
His host because the guest is weary of him? |
که مهمان چو سیر آید از میزبان
به زشتی برد نام پالیزبان |

Time was,” he went on to the tent-enclosure,
‘When thou hast held Jamshíd in thine embrace,
Who left the way of God and forfeited
Good days on earth and jocund Paradise. |
سراپرده را گفت بد روزگار
که جمشید را داشتی بر کنار |

The day too was when thou for Sháh Káús
Didst serve as veil and shelter for the troops, |
همان روز کز بهر کاوس شاه
بدی پرده و سایه‌ٔ بارگاه |

Káús who sought to know God's mysteries,
And hankered to investigate the stars! |
کجا راه یزدان همی باز جست
همی خواستی اختران را درست |

The earth was all convulsed on his account,
And filled with depredation, sword, and arrow. |
زمین زو سراسر پرآشوب بود
پر از خنجر و غارت و چوب بود |

Gushtásp is now thine owner, and Jámásp
Is standing in his presence. |
کنون مایه‌دار تو گشتاسب است
به پیش وی اندر چو جاماسب است |

At his side
Is seated on one hand Zarduhsht who brought
The Zandavasta out of Paradise; |
نشسته به یک دست او زرد هشت
که با زند و است آمده‌ست از بهشت |

Upon the other Bishútan, the brave
And good, not seeking this world's weal and woe; |
به دیگر پشوتن گوِ نیک مرد
چشیده ز گیتی بسی گرم و سرد |

In front is glorious Asfandiyár,
The man in whom the wheel of fortune joyeth, |
به پیش اندرون فرّخ اسفندیار
کزو شاد شد گردش روزگار |
|

In whom the hearts of good men live; the bad
Turn slaves through terror of his scimitar.” |
دل نیک‌مردان بدو زنده شد
بد از بیم شمشیر او بنده شد |

The valiant cavalier passed through the gate.
Asfandiyár looked after him and, |
بیامد به در پهلوان سوار
پس اندر همی دیدش اسفندیار |

when
He had departed, said to Bishútan:—
“I must admit his manliness and prowess. |
چو برگشت ازو با پشوتن بگفت
که مردی و گُردی نشاید نهفت |
|

I have not looked on such a horse and horseman,
And know not how this combat will result. |
ندیدم بدین گونه اسب و سوار
ندانم که چون خیزد از کارزار |
|
