Then said the veteran: “This is not my place;
Let me have that to which I am entitled.” |
جهاندیده گفت این نه جای من است
به جایی نشینم که رای من است |

The prince said to Bahman upon his right:—
“Give him the seat as he demandeth it.” |
به بهمن بفرمود کز دست راست
نشستی بیارای ازآن کِم سزاست |

Then Rustam in his wrath said to the prince:—
“Look on me fairly and with open eyes; |
چنین گفت با شاهزاده به خشم
که آیین من بین و بگشای چشم |

Regard my prowess and illustrious stock,
For I am of the seed of valiant Sám. |
هنر بین و این نامور گوهرم
که از تخمه‌ٔ سام گُند آورم |

هنر باید از مرد و فرّ و نژاد
کفی راد دارد دلی پر ز داد |

Though thou hast no seat that befitteth me
I have the Grace, my triumphs, and my prudence.” |
سزاوار من گر تو را نیست جای
مرا هست پیروزی و هوش و رای |

Thereat the prince gave orders to his son
To place a golden seat upon the dais, |
از آن پس بفرمود فرزند شاه
که کرسیّ زرّین نهد پیشِ گاه |

بدان تا گَو نامور پهلوان
نشیند بر شهریار جوان |
|

And with a scented orange Rustam came,
And took his seat but he was all aflame. |
بیامد بر آن کرسی زر نشست
پر از خشم بویا تُرنجی بدست |
