For ten days,
he didn't come to work. After ten days when he
returned, his colleagues saw that he was completely tired
and depleted. He asked after the health of his
colleagues with that same
humility as in the past. But his colleagues found that
SharafAdDin was burning in the fire of fever. He sat
down at his desk. He took out his papers cautiously.
He took up the pen that his colleagues had given him as a
gift. He bent
his head over his papers and began writing. His
colleagues smiled at each other. That is to say, it was okay,
everything turned out okay. SharafAdDin's head
was bent and he kept on writing. Suddenly, he
lifted his head. He summoned the office assistant and
asked: - Have you seen my pen? |

The office
assistant look this way and that way and said: - No, I
haven't seen your pen.
His colleagues
started looking with surprise at SharafAdDin.
And he with a very serious tone asked them:
- You ... honestly tell [me], "You haven't seen my
pen?"
Everyone answered:
- What do we want with your pen? |

SharafAdDin, in
a state where the heat of fever
could be seen (read)
in his eyes, said: - Then what happened to my pen? |
24 |
His colleagues
remained silent and he shouted: - I know you were jealous
of the writings I used to write! Then, to the bewilderment
of his colleagues he slowly/quietly added:
- This is injustice, you know. What sin have my
children committed?
One of his colleagues asked:
- What do you mean?
SharafAdDin said:
- The pen, I mean
my pen!
His colleagues all said:
- We swear that we haven't seen your pen. |

Suddenly
SharafAdDin started
laughing and burst out in loud laughter. In
this state, he said: - What times! What times!
And he threw the pen which his colleagues had given him
hard on the ground. The pen broke into bits.
SharafAdDin shouted:
- May this pen be broken!
Then, as if a line of poetry should be added to this
utterance, he said:
- May the gate of the daily bread of my children be shut!
Again he burst out in loud laughter and added:
- And may the respect of my clients be over!
|

He put his head
on his desk and started crying. His colleagues got up
to console him. But suddenly SharafAdDin stood up and
said: - You don't think the
boss himself
might have taken my pen?
Everyone remained uncomfortably quiet and SharafAdDin
went out of the room. A moment later, a commotion
arose from the boss' office. Then silenced reigned. |

The colleagues
of SharafAdDin didn't see him anymore. For a long time,
his desk and chair remained vacant. One day, a new
official who had recently been hired sat down
at SharafAdDin's desk. He was tall and thin.
When he was about to start work, he took out his ball-point
pen which was black. He removed the cap. He
twisted the lower portion until the tip of the pen appeared.
The man looked at the pen a moment with admiration. |

The colleagues
of the office asked him: - Is its tip of gold? The new
worker said:
- Yeah.
Then they further
asked:
- Is its clasp also gold?
The worker answered:
- Yeah, it's pure gold!
The heads of the colleagues of the office bent and
everyone snickered. |
