Child, tiptoe tiptoe, went away slowly into the alley of dragonflies.

طفل، پاورچین‌پاورچین، دور شد کم‌کم در کوچه سنجاقک‌ها.

I packed my luggage, went out of the town of frivolous ideas

بار خود را بستم، رفتم از شهر خیالات سبک بیرون

My heart, heavy with the nostalgia of dragonflies.

دلم از غربت سنجاقک پر.

I went to the feast of the world:

من به مهمانی دنیا رفتم:

To the prairie of gloom,

من به دشت اندوه،

To the orchard of Gnosticism,

من به باغ عرفان،

To the light-spangled court of knowledge, I went.

من به ایوان چراغانی دانش رفتم.

I climbed up the stairs of religion,

رفتم از پله مذهب بالا.

To the end of the alley of doubt,

تا ته کوچه شک،

To the chill air of disdain,

تا هوای خنک استغنا،

To the wet night of affection, I went.

تا شب خیس محبّت رفتم.

I went to see someone on the yonder end of love.

من به دیدار کسی رفتم در آن سر عشق.

I went, I went up to women

رفتم٬ رفتم تا زن،

To the lamp of pleasure,

تا چراغ لذّت،

To the silence of desire,

تا سکوت خواهش،

To the sound of feathers of loneliness.

تا صدای پر تنهایی.

Things [that] I saw on the face of the earth:

چیزها دیدم در روی زمین:

I saw a child, who smelled the moon.

کودکی دیدم، ماه را بو می‌کرد.

I saw a door-less cage wherein illumination was in the throws of death.

قفسی بی‌در دیدم که در آن، روشنی پرپر می‌زد.

I saw a ladder on which love climbed to the roof of heaven.

نردبانی که از آن، عشق می‌رفت به بام ملکوت.

I saw a woman, who pounded light in a mortar.

من زنی را دیدم، نور در هاون می‌کوبید.

At noon laid out upon their dining-cloth, there was bread, there were herbs, there was the platter of dew, there was the hot bowl of affection.

ظهر در سفرهٔ آنان نان بود، سبزی بود، دوری شبنم بود، کاسهٔ داغ محبت بود.

I saw a beggar, who went door to door, soliciting the song of skylark.

من گدایی دیدم، در به در می‌رفت آواز چکاوک می‌خواست

And a street sweeper who bid a prayer over a melon peel.

و سپوری که به یک پوستهٔ خربزه می‌برد نماز.

I saw a lamb who ate a kite.

بره‌ای را دیدم، بادبادک می‌خورد.

I saw a donkey who understood the alfalfa.

من الاغی دیدم، ینجه را می‌فهمید.

In the pasture of exhortation, I saw a cow, satiated.

در چراگاه «نصیحت» گاوی دیدم سیر.

I saw a poet who in his address, referred to lily as: “Your Honor”

شاعری دیدم هنگام خطاب، به گل سوسن می‌گفت: «شما»

I saw a book, whose words were all made of crystal.

من کتابی دیدم، واژه‌هایش همه از جنس بلور.

I saw a paper made of spring-time

‌کاغذی دیدم، از جنس بهار.

I saw a museum far from grass,

موزه‌ای دیدم دور از سبزه،

a mosque far from water.

مسجدی دور از آب.

At the bedside of a despondent clergyman, I saw an overflowing jug of questions.

سر بالین فقیهی نومید، کوزه‌ای دیدم لبریز سؤال.

A mule, I saw, loaded with “Essays”

قاطری دیدم بارش «انشا»

A camel, I saw, loaded with the empty basket of “Advice and Allegory”

اشتری دیدم بارش سبد خالی «پند و امثال»

A religious sage, I saw, loaded with verses of “tannana-ha ya hoo”.

عارفی دیدم بارش «تنناها یا هو»
