Computer Assignment #1
1 On a piece of paper, neatly write out 5 nonsense words to turn in.
2 Preview tomorrow's lesson by continuing to read Windfuhr Chapter 1 and trying out these alphabet flashcards.

3  Register yourself on the Watering Hole by getting yourself a username and password.  You should be able to immediately post a test message to the Watering Hole for fun.  Then, use that same username and password to give yourself a grade on the MyGrade program.  To do this, find today's date on the calendar on your syllabus and hit MyGrade and login and give yourself your grade.  You definitely deserve an A for the day if you've done all this!

Computer Assignment #2
Use Behdād's Editor, also known as  ویرایش‌گرِ بهداد  or virāyesh-gar-e Behdād, to practice learning how the letters of Persian join each other.  Get familiar with the location of all the keys.  Your assignment is

1 Type out all the letters of the alphabet in order.  First type the letter once and hit space.  Then type the letter 3 times and hit Enter and go to the next line and repeat for the next letter and so on to Yeh which is the last letter.  Type in your own email over the place where it says, "YourE-mail@domain.com" and hit the "E-mail Instructor" button and email us Computer Assignment #2.

2  Buy a pack of 3 x 5 index cards and cut in half to make more portable.  Make yourself at least 10 flashcards of those letters (isolated or joined) which you yourself are having trouble remembering.  Rubber-band them together and bring them to class to get full credit for the assignment.

3  Give yourself a grade on the MyGrade program.  Click on MyGrade on today's date on the syllabus and go ahead and give yourself an A for today. You deserve it!

Computer Assignment #3
1 Listen to Greetings and Numbers.

2  Listen to this Dictation  of 5 nonsensical words and write each down in Persian on a piece of paper.  For best results, create a folder on your hard drive for this and future dictation mp3's.  To download, just Right-click on the link (where it says Dictation in blue) and Save. (Mac users, Control-click and Save.)  This is important because you'll waste your allotment of UT bandwidth if you listen online.

Computer Assignment #4

1 Copy out Lesson 1 on a piece of paper in your own handwriting. This is also available via your Audio and Handwriting page.

2  Listen to the audio recording for Lesson 1, Ghanoonparvar. This is also available via your Audio and Handwriting page.

3  Listen to the audio files for Windfuhr Chapter 1. These are available via your UT Direct >> My Classes >> PRS 506. Remember to download first, then listen so you save bandwidth.

4 Make your own flashcards for the words in Lesson 1, Ghanoonparvar. Be sure to run through them every day!

Computer Assignment #5

1 Copy out Lesson 2 on a piece of paper in your own handwriting. This is also available via your Audio and Handwriting page.

2  Listen to the audio recording for Lesson 2 , Ghanoonparvar. This is also available via your Audio and Handwriting page.

3  Go to FarsiDic Persian to English online dictionary. By default, you'll be in "exact word" mode.  Keep that.  (This dictionary works best on Windows with Internet Explorer. If the Persian results end up in LTR direction instead of RTL, you may be on something other than Windows with Internet Explorer. No matter, you can still do the assignment!). Look up these 3 words made up of letters which don't join on the left:

 در

راه

آز

Now look up these 3 words beginning with letters which do join on the left:

تا

یک

حق

On the same piece of paper on which you wrote down #1 above, write down exactly all the English meanings for each word.  It is not necessary to write the Persian or worry about the pronunciation.  Be sure to copy down all meanings given verbatim.  Use this dictionary only and do the assignment even if you already know all these words.

4 Make your own flashcards for the words in Lesson 2, Ghanoonparvar. Be sure to run through the Lesson 1 words you learned yesterday!

Computer Assignment #6

1 Copy out Lesson 3 on a piece of paper in your own handwriting. This is also available via your Audio and Handwriting page.

2  Listen to the audio recording for Lesson 3 , Ghanoonparvar. This is also available via your Audio and Handwriting page.

3 Make your own flashcards for the words in Lesson 3, Ghanoonparvar. Be sure to run through the Lesson 1 and Lesson 2 words since they will start appearing on your quizzes in English and you give the Persian!

Computer Assignment #7

1 Copy out Lesson 4 on a piece of paper in your own handwriting. This is also available via your Audio and Handwriting page.

2  Listen to the audio recording for Lesson 4 , Ghanoonparvar. This is also available via your Audio and Handwriting page.

3 Make your own flashcards for the words in Lesson 4, Ghanoonparvar. Be sure to run through the Lesson 1, 2 & 3 words so you can give the Persian equivalent of the English on your daily quizzes from now on.

4 Listen to your Windfuhr audio which has moved to this secure address. You'll need the same login and password you use for the Watering Hole and MyGrade.

5 Listen to Firoozeh's Lesson 2 Greetings and Goodbyes.

Computer Assignment #8

1 Copy out Lesson 5 on a piece of paper in your own handwriting. This is also available via your Audio and Handwriting page.

2  Listen to the audio recording for Lesson 5 , Ghanoonparvar. This is also available via your Audio and Handwriting page.

3 Make your own flashcards for the words in Lesson 5, Ghanoonparvar. Be sure to run through the Lesson 1, 2, 3 & 4 words because any are fair game for your daily quizzes!

4 For fun and NOT to turn in, listen to the Windfuhr Audio for Chapter 2 and try to write down the words you hear before you can buy your book and look at the answers.  Note that Windfuhr has used real words so in principle, there may be more than one way to spell them, especially for words containing, z, s, t, and h.  However, in the Windfuhr book, you will find only the proper spelling.

تکلیف رایانه‌ای ش. ۹

Computer Assignment #9

1 Copy out Lesson 6  on a piece of paper in your own handwriting. This is also available via your Audio and Handwriting page.

2  Listen to the audio recording for Lesson 6 , Ghanoonparvar. This is also available via your Audio and Handwriting page.

3 Make your own flashcards for the words in Lesson 6, Ghanoonparvar. Be sure to run through the Lesson 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 words because anyone can learn the new ones, it's remembering the old ones that's the trick!

4 Continue listening to Windfuhr Audio for Chapter 2 just for fun, self-dictation practice.  Again, no need to turn anything in.  You can check your answers when you buy the book.

5 Take this dictation for vowels and diphthongs practice.  Write down what you hear and then check the answer key.  No need to turn it in, however, something similar will be on Friday's test.

Computer Assignment #16

1  Non-Heritage Section: Each non-heritage student must email an mp3 recording of him or herself reading Lesson 8 to their designated partner in the Heritage Section.  The Heritage student should insert helpful comments and encouragement as needed and email that back to the first student.  The first student will re-record and email that same mp3 to Shiva who is at shinaz62@gmail.com.  Hint: The more time you put into reading it nicely, the more compliments that are sure to come your way from the Heritage students! Technical hint: Audacity saves files in .wav format by default.  When you save (Audacity says "export as mp3" instead of "save as mp3") your recording the first time, Audacity will ask where you've put the Lame mp3 Encoder.  If you'll recall, you'd put it earlier in the same folder as the Audacity program.  You just need to let Audacity know this the first time when it prompts you.

2 Heritage Section: The first designated heritage student will record the first sentence of our chain story in mp3 format and email that to the next heritage student who will add another sentence.

Take Home Final

Due by WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 13, 12:00  Noon

Rezā Khān, commanding a Russian-trained Cossack Brigade,  marched on Tehran and staged a coup d'état on February 21, 1921 overthrowing the Qājār Dynasty. He changed his name to Reza Shah Pahlavi and reigned as shāh from 1925-1941.  He is known for his modernizing and Westernizing policies aimed at helping Iran catch up with the West and at the same time for trying to restore the glory and splendor of the ancient Persian Empire.  One reason he was able to rise to power was that he was a very strong leader and many Iranians believed that what Iran needed most at the time was a dictator.  They were willing (at least in the beginning) to overlook some of the tyranny and stomping on individual rights for the sake of progress.  He thought of the country as an army and each citizen as a soldier.  Military discipline was the rule.  No slacking in the ranks could be tolerated.

Now, as you will have noticed, your experience in PRS 506 has not been unlike living under a tyrannical despot and the class could very well be likened to some sort of boot camp.  Your assignment is to go to Behdād's Editor and type up your personal account of the harrowing adventure in Persian.  Let us hear how much you suffered. List all the things you were forced to do, how many hours you had to spend on each activity, what time you went to bed every night (if at all) and all the terrible things the teachers said and did.  Report on any conversations among your fellow soldiers and how you all had to rely on one another and pick each other up when the going got too rough.  Specific anecdotes and war stories are most welcome! Don't spare any gory details of this long, black night.  You might also give tips on how you managed to survive for the benefit of next year's unfortunates.

Please write this in standard, written style Persian but include somewhere at least 2 lines of reported conversation in spoken style.  The minimum should be about one-two paragraphs but you can go on as long as you like if you feel like you need the extra credit or you want the practice.  These will be posted on the website and also on the dept bulletin board with your first name although as usual, you may specify that we not post either of them if you are uncomfortable with the idea.

One nice thing about Behdād's Editor is that you may save your work-in-progress as a text file (file.txt) and retrieve it repeatedly whenever you want to work on it.  You could also save it in a Word .doc and copy it into Behdād's Editor each time.  When you are done, just hit the "Email Instructor" button and you'll get a confirmation it's been received.
