Built on an existing system for Hebrew, Syriac, Aramaic and Greek, the additional Arabic letters were added on the [left] end. The groupings of letters don't have any meaning, they're just a memory aid. However, if you hear the two "he"s being distinguished as "he-ye hotti" (ح) and "he-ye havvaz" (ه), now you know what is meant. Sometimes a poem will contain a chronogram, that is, the numerical sum of the letters of a word will add up to a special number, often a date which may be the year the poem was composed.
