The beat cop saw a drunk on the way and grabbed him by the collar, |
محتسب، مستی به ره دید و گریبانش گرفت |

The drunk said: “Oh, friend, this is a shirt, a
bridle it is
not.” |
مست گفت: ای دوست، این پیراهن است، افسار نیست |

Said: “You’re drunk, that’s why you trip and rise as you walk.” |
گفت: مستی، زان سبب افتان و خیزان میروی |

Said: “[My] walking’s not at fault, the road is not smooth.” |
گفت: جرم راه رفتن نیست، ره هموار نیست |

|
Said: “I must take you to the Judge’s house.” |
گفت: میباید تو را تا خانهٔ قاضی برم |

Said: “Go and come back in the morning, the Judge is not awake at
midnight.” |
گفت: رو صبح آی، قاضی نیمهشب بیدار نیست |

Said: “The Governor’s mansion is nearby, there we go.” |
گفت: نزدیک است والی را سرای، آنجا شویم |

Said: “[And] whereby do we know the Governor is not in the tavern?” |
گفت: والی از کجا در خانهٔ خمّار نیست؟ |

Said: “Until we call the Sheriff, sleep in the mosque.” |
گفت: تا داروغه را گوئیم در مسجد بخواب |

Said: “Mosque is not a
bedroom for evildoers!” |
گفت: مسجد خوابگاه مردم بدکار نیست |

Said: “Secretly pay a Dinar and set yourself free.” |
گفت: دیناری بده پنهان و خود را وا رهان |

Said:
“Matter of religion is not a matter of Drachmas and Dinars.” |
گفت: کار شرع کار درهم و دینار نیست |

Said: “For fine, I will take off your
clothing.” (jāme-at: the -at is a dative construction, I will
have clothes removed for you) |
گفت: از بهر غرامت جامهات بیرون کنم |

Said: “It is decayed, besides a trace of
warp and woof it is
not!” |
گفت: پوسیده است، جز نقشی ز پود و تار نیست |

Said: “You’re not aware that [your] hat fell off your head.” (oftād-at:
the -at is a dative construction: you've had hat fall off) |
گفت: آگه نیستی کز سر در افتادت کلاه |

Said: “Head must contain [a sane] mind, to be hatless is no
shame.” |
گفت: در سر عقل باید، بیکلاهی عار نیست |

Said: “You drank too much wine, that’s why you have lost yourself.” |
گفت: می بسیار خوردی زان چنین بیخود شدی |

Said: “Oh idle-talker, a discussion of much or little, this is
not.” |
گفت: ای بیهودهگو حرف کم و بسیار نیست |

Said: “Sober people must admonish the drunk.” |
گفت: باید حد زند هشیارمردم مست را |

Said: “Bring forth a sober [one], no one is sober (aware/alert,
possible socio-political interpretation of hushyār) around here!” |
گفت: هشیاری بیار، اینجا کسی هشیار نیست. |
