The Alley

کوچه

Without you, one moonlit night, I passed again through that alley

بی تو مهتاب شبی باز از آن کوچه گذشتم

My body all eyes, I stared [and] searched for you

همه تن چشم شدم خیره به دنبال تو گشتم

The excitement of seeing you overflowed from the cup of my existence

شوق دیدار تو لبریز شد از جام وجودم،

I became that crazed lover that I was (had been)

شدم آن عاشق دیوانه که بودم

In the secret chamber of my soul, the flower-spark of the memory of you lit up

در نهانخانهٔ جانم گل یاد تو درخشید

Garden of one hundred memories laughed

باغ صد خاطره خندید

Perfume of one hundred memories wafted

عطر صد خاطره پیچید

I remembered that one night with you, we passed through that alley

یادم آمد که شبی با هم از آن کوچه گذشتیم

We unfolded our wings and: (2 possible readings with or without ezāfe)

khalvat-e delkhāste: in that heart-desired-for quiet space we roamed (as heard in the recording)

khalvat delkhāste: in that quiet space we became heart-desiring (we became lovers)

پر گشودیم و در آن خلوت دلخواسته گشتیم

For a time, on the edge of that stream we sat

ساعتی بر لب آن جوی نشستیم

You, all secrets of the world poured in your black eyes

تو همه راز جهان ریخته در چشم سیاهت

I, all absorbed in watching your gaze

من همه محو تماشای نگاهت

Sky clear and night calm

آسمان صاف و شب آرام

Fate laughing and the times tame

بخت خندان و زمان رام

The halo of the moon poured down in the water

خوشهٔ ماه فرو ریخته در آب

The branches, hands lifted in the moonlight

شاخه‌ها دست برآورده به مهتاب

Night and desert and flower and stone

شب و صحرا و گل و سنگ

All, heart given over to the singing of the nightingale

همه دل داده به آواز شباهنگ

I remember: you said to me:
Avoid this love!

یادم آید: تو به من گفتی:
از این عشق حذر کن!

Look at this water for a few moments

لحظه‌ای چند بر این آب نظر کن

Water, it is the mirror of passing love

آب، آئینه عشق گذران است

You who today, your glance is restlessly seeking a glance

تو که امروز نگاهت به نگاهی نگران است

Come tomorrow, your heart will be with others!

باش فردا،‌ که دلت با دگران است!

So that you forget, a little while, travel from this city!

تا فراموش کنی، چندی از این شهر سفر کن!

I said to you:

با تو گفتم:‌

Avoid love?

حذر از عشق؟

هرگز نتوانم!

On the first day when my heart flew desiring you

روز اول که دل من به تمنای تو پر زد

Like a pigeon, I sat on the edge of your roof

چون کبوتر لب بام تو نشستم،

You threw rocks at me, I did not split, did not break away

تو به من سنگ زدی من نه رمیدم، نه گسستم

Again I said: You are the hunter and I am the deer of the prairie

باز گفتم که: تو صیّادی و من آهوی دشتم

So that I fall in your trap, I roamed and roamed everywhere

تا به دام تو درافتم، همه جا گشتم و گشتم

Avoid love, I don't know how

حذر از عشق ندانم

Travel away from you, never, I cannot, I cannot...!

سفر از پیش تو هرگز نتوانم، نتوانم...!

A tear from the branch dropped down

اشکی از شاخه فرو ریخت

The night-bird gave a bitter wail and fled!

مرغ شب نالهٔ تلخی زد و بگریخت!

Tear in your eye shook

اشک در چشم تو لرزید

Moon upon your love smiled

ماه بر عشق تو خندید،

I remember that from you I heard no answer

یادم آید که از تو جوابی نشنیدم

I drew my legs up in the hem of sorrow (I huddled up in sorrow)

پای در دامن اندوه کشیدم

I did not split, I did not run away

نگسستم، نرمیدم

Went in the darkness of sadness, that night and still other nights

رفت در ظلمت غم، آن شب و شب‌های دگر هم

Neither you asked about the distressed lover anymore

نه گرفتی دگر از عاشق آزرده خبر هم

Nor you pass through that alley anymore

نه کنی دیگر از آن کوچه گذر هم!

Without you however, in what a state, I passed through that alley!

بی تو امّا به چه حالی من از آن کوچه گذشتم!
