 حکایت ماجرای نحوی و کشتیبان  از مولانا

 Once a grammarian stepped into a boat
And turned towards the oarsman just to gloat:		 آن یکی نحوی به کشتی در نشست
رو به کشتی‌بان نهاد آن خود پرست
2 ‘Have you learned any grammar?’ He said, ‘No.’
‘Then half your life’s been wasted just to row!’		 گفت: «هیچ از نحو خواندی؟» گفت: «لا»
گفت: «نیم  عمر تو شد در فنا»
3 Although this made the oarsman burn with pain
From answering back he opted to refrain.		 دل‌شکسته گشت کشتی‌بان ز تاب
لیک آن دم کرد خامُش از جواب
4 Wind steered the boat towards a whirlpool there
The oarsman shouted to him, once aware,		 باد کشتی را به گردابی فکند
گفت کشتی‌بان بد آن نحوی، بلند:
5 ‘Have you learned how to swim and keep afloat?’
‘I’ve never learned, skilled captain of my boat.’		 «هیچ دانی آشنا کردن؟ بگو»
گفت: «نی، ای خوش‌جواب خوب رو!»
6 ‘Grammarian, your whole life has been in vain:
We’re sinking fast – what good now is your brain!’		 گفت: «کلِّ  عمرت ای نحوی فناست
ز آن که کشتی غرق این گرداب‌هاست»
7 Not grammar but effacement’s needed here –
If self-effaced dive in and have no fear!		 محو می‌باید نه نحو اینجا، بدان
گر تو محوی، بی‌خطر در آب ران
8 While corpses can float on a stormy sea,
How can the living find security?		 آب دریا مرده را بر سر نهد
ور بود زنده، ز دریا کی رهد؟
9 When you have died to human qualities
You’ll be borne by the sea of mysteries.		 چون بمردی تو ز اوصاف بشر
بحر  اسرارت نهد بر فرق  سر
10 He who called others ‘donkey’ pays the price –
He’s now left skidding like an ass on ice!		 ای که خَلقان را تو خر می‌خوانده‌ای!
این زمان چون خر بر این یخ مانده‌ای
11 Even if you’re the scholar of the age,
Observe the passing of this world, deep sage!		 گر تو علّامهٔ زمانی در جهان
نَک فنای این جهان بین وین زمان
12 We’ve silenced the grammarian in narration
To teach the grammar of annihilation,		 مرد نحوی را از آن در دوختیم
تا شما را نحوِ  محو آموختیم
13 The law of law and grammar that’s most pure
You’ll find through being less, of this be sure.		 فقهِ  فقه و نحوِ  نحو و صرفِ  صرف
در کم آمد یابی ای یار شگرف
14 The jug of water is our knowledge, while
The caliph’s is the Tigris and the Nile.		 آن سبوی آب، دانش‌های ماست
و آن خلیفه، دجلهٔ علمِ خداست
15 We’re taking our own jugs of water there –
We’re donkeys, even if we’re unaware!		 ما سبوها پُر بدجله می‌بریم
گر نه خر دانیم خود را، ما خریم
16 The bedouin had an excuse and cause,
Not knowing back home what the Tigris was:		 باری، اَعرابی بدآن معذور بود
کو ز دجله غافل و بس دور بود
17 If he had known the Tigris like those near
He wouldn’t then have carried his jug here –		 گر ز دجله با خبر بودی چو ما
او نبردی آن سبو را، جا به جا
18 If of the River Tigris he had known,
He would have slammed the jug upon a stone!		 بل که از دجله چو واقف آمدی
آن سبو را بر سر سنگی زدی
