Description:  This is a language-competency-based course designed for students who have completed First-Year Persian I or its equivalent as well as students who have had exposure to Persian and who pass a placement examination for PRS 506.  Having been introduced to both colloquial and literary Persian in First-Year Persian I, the students in First-Year Persian II expand their literary Persian skills as well as practicing switching between colloquial and literary registers.  The main thrust of the class is on daily drilling to reinforce vocabulary and grammatical constructions.  Daily homework assignments and quizzes are returned promptly to the students so as to provide feedback on the students' progress.  Reading materials from the assigned texts are used to improve students' reading comprehension and to build vocabulary.  Audio tapes of all reading materials are made available in mp3 format on the course website.  Students also watch a feature film one hour per week.  The film will be repeated several times within the course of the semester (usually two to three films are shown over the entire semester) on the basis of which students are provided with exercises to improve all skills and increase their vocabulary retention.  In addition, computer-assisted instructional material for Persian will be used as an auxiliary tool in the teaching of various language skills.  Students are required to participate in the course weblog and Online Forum to gain skills enabling them to become active members of the online Persian-speaking world and feel comfortable typing and navigating through Persian websites.  The students will also learn to recite a few lines of poetry.  At the end of the semester, students are expected to have a sound understanding of the basic elements of Persian grammar and to reach the level of listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills established in the University Standard Exit Criteria approved for first-year Persian by the American Association of Teachers of Persian.

As in PRS 506, the class will have two sections, one for students who have had previous exposure to the language and one for students without a background in Persian.   Both groups will be together two days a week and taught separately three days a week.  There will be a total of three instructors for the class and students are encouraged to attend office hours for additional practice outside of class.
